Dragons, peacocks, lotus flowers, birds, animals. Auspicious motifs are combined so that the characters themselves become a single piece of artwork — that is Hanamoji. This feature introduces that world through the verified public profile, the actual artwork, the award and the material themes of Yuko Imai (Iko).

Yuko Imai, known as Iko, is a Hanamoji artist and instructor who continues both to make work and to teach. She teaches at each learner's own pace, and builds her sessions around people leaving them wanting to draw again. TC Academy connects the world of her work and teaching materials to online learning.
In September 2026, Yuko Imai received the Shibayama Award for “Arigatou no Ki” at the 58th Shin-In Exhibition held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. TC Academy connects her continuing creative practice and teaching experience to online learning.
Hanamoji is good-fortune art in which characters are drawn out of auspicious imagery — dragons, flowers, birds, animals. Displayed at home, it is enjoyed rather like a charm. A name, a favourite word, a message for someone. Whatever the characters are, each one fills with motifs and the whole becomes a single artwork.
* These are the meanings traditionally associated with each motif. No particular effect is guaranteed.
Colour, ground and finish differ from piece to piece. All of these are actual works by Yuko Imai.

TC Academy supports three ways of learning. Which of them is actually offered is controlled by the course page that is published at the time.

Learning directly with the instructor. When booking is enabled for an eligible course, choose an available slot and join the issued online meeting. Google Meet is the current primary meeting platform.

Start by drawing once. This stage is about enjoying the time spent, not about drawing well.
Repeat the basic lines and shapes — including how to recover when something does not work.
Finish a complete work on your own name, your own word, or a theme for someone you have in mind.
Display it, give it to someone who matters, let the work travel to other people.
Consider passing it on to the next person. At TC Academy this stage is subject to review.
You do not need to progress through every stage. There is no hierarchy between them, and continuing purely as a hobby is a complete way to learn. Sales, income or certification outcomes are not guaranteed.
Being bad at drawing is not a problem. Beginners are taught step by step, and still finish a piece.
People from their teens to their nineties enjoy it. There is no age limit.
Wanting a pleasant few hours, or something that is just for you, is reason enough.
A name or a favourite word drawn as Hanamoji also works as a present for someone important.
